About the Role

As a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Clarence Correctional Centre, you will play a pivotal role in delivering specialised, evidence-based mental health care within our Primary Health team. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine clinical expertise, autonomous practice, and leadership to positively impact a complex and often vulnerable population.

 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide advanced mental health assessment, diagnosis, and management for people in custody.
  • Prescribe and monitor appropriate treatments, including medications and therapeutic interventions.
  • Deliver person-centred care that is trauma-informed, culturally safe, and responsive to individual needs.
  • Apply expert clinical judgement to manage complex presentations and respond confidently to dynamic situations.
  • Collaborate with GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, allied health professionals, and custodial staff to ensure coordinated care.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Current Nurse Practitioner credentialing with demonstrated experience in mental health.
  • Strong clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in high-acuity environments.
  • Leadership and mentorship experience, with the ability to support and develop nursing colleagues.
  • Understanding of the social, psychological, and systemic factors affecting mental health within correctional settings.
  • Commitment to culturally safe, trauma-informed, and respectful practice.



Leadership and Collaboration

You will provide guidance and mentorship to the nursing team, contribute to workforce development, and drive continuous quality improvement initiatives. By fostering a collaborative approach with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will ensure holistic, coordinated, and high-quality mental health care.

This is a highly autonomous role, working 8 shifts per fortnight (9:00am–7:00pm).

Who you are:

You are an endorsed Nurse Practitioner with:

  • A Master of Nursing Practice and NMBA endorsement for Nurse Practitioner

  • Strong clinical judgement, problem-solving, and leadership capabilities

  • Alignment with the NMBA Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice (2014)

  • The ability to work independently, mentor others, and manage complex mental health care in a secure setting

  • Experience in mental health nursing, acute psychiatric care, or correctional health with a mental health focus (highly regarded)

  • Current Advanced Life Support and First Aid
