Nurse Practitioner: Clarence Correctional Centre

As a Nurse Practitioner at Clarence Correctional
Centre, you’ll deliver advanced, evidence-based clinical care in one of the most unique and challenging healthcare environments in Australia. Working alongside a second Nurse Practitioner and the onsite Medical Officers, you’ll play a critical role in supporting the safe, respectful, evidenced based care of our inmate population.

This is a highly autonomous role, working 8 shifts per fortnight (9:00am to 7:00pm), influencing clinical practice, mentor nursing staff, and contribute to the ongoing development of correctional health services.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with the Clarence Correctional Centre Medical Officers and multidisciplinary team
  • Deliver comprehensive, evidence-based primary healthcare to inmates
  • Conduct physical assessments, diagnose conditions, and initiate treatment plans
  • Manage acute and chronic conditions, prescribe medications, and monitor treatment outcomes
  • Implement targeted health education and promotion programs for inmates
  • Respond to medical emergencies, provide immediate care, and coordinate emergency transfers
  • Conduct emergency simple film x-rays where required
  • Apply advanced clinical onsite treatment, sutures and plastering
  • Assess mental health concerns, provide initial management, and liaise with mental health teams
  • Refer patients to external specialists and facilitate continuity of care with community services
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and care planning
  • Maintain accurate, confidential health records in compliance with legal and organisational standards
  • Contribute to audits, reporting requirements, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Act as a clinical leader within the nursing team, mentoring and supporting staff development
  • Promote evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery
  • Identify and manage clinical risks and support workplace health and safety
  • Contribute to policy development and clinical guideline reviews

Located on the stunning NSW North Coast, Clarence Correctional Centre is Australia’s largest correctional facility with capacity for 1,700 inmates. Opened in 2020, it operates with a focus on:

Who You Are

  • You are an endorsed Nurse Practitioner with:
  • A Master of Nursing Practice and NMBA endorsement for Nurse Practitioner
  • Strong clinical judgment, problem solving, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently, mentor others, and manage complex care in a secure setting
  • Experience in acute, emergency, primary, remote, or correctional health (highly regarded)
  • Current Advance Life Support
