Make an Impact as a Mental Health Registered Nurse

As a Mental Health Registered Nurse, you will play a vital role in improving the mental health and wellbeing of men in our care. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you’ll provide high-quality, evidence-informed nursing care and mental health support to individuals presenting with a range of psychological and emotional needs.

You’ll contribute to creating a safer, more supportive correctional environment through therapeutic engagement, assessment, and culturally responsive care.

 

In This Role, You Will:

  • Deliver comprehensive mental health assessments, risk screenings, and clinical observations
  • Develop and implement individualised care plans and recovery-oriented interventions
  • Provide psychoeducation, de-escalation support, and brief therapeutic interventions (e.g. motivational interviewing, trauma-informed approaches)
  • Support the early identification and management of mental health distress and crisis presentations
  • Work in partnership with Māori health practitioners, cultural advisors, and whānau to provide mana-enhancing care
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and referrals to external mental health services as needed
  • Maintain clinical documentation and contribute to quality and continuous improvement processes
  • Promote a safe, respectful environment that values diversity, cultural identity, and rehabilitative opportunities

 

To Be Successful, You Will Have:

  • Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health Scope)
  • Experience working in mental health, ideally in forensic, corrections, or high-complexity settings
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori perspectives on health and wellbeing
  • A strong commitment to cultural safety, equity, and supporting Māori-led health outcomes
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment
  • High standards of clinical practice, ethical behaviour, and integrity
  • Familiarity with recovery-focused care models and risk management frameworks
