As a Mate in our Marine Scotland team, you’ll play a key role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of our vessels. Your work will help ensure vital maritime services run smoothly, contributing to the security and sustainability of our waters.

From overseeing deck operations to ensuring compliance with safety standards, you’ll help create a safer environment for colleagues and communities alike. What you’ll do as a Mate
- Plan and supervise maintenance of all deck areas, including holds, hatches, and superstructure. As part of a small crew, you will be expected to carry out onboard maintenance on deck to maintain the upkeep of the vessel
- Manage loading and discharge of various equipment up to 10 t in weight using the vessels onboard Palfinger and Heila cranes in a safe and competent manner.
- Oversee deck stores, including stowage, inventory management, and re-ordering
- Act as a Watchkeeping Officer, following navigation procedures and international regulations. Carry out chart corrections.
- Organise and conduct drills, including fire, oil pollution containment, and life raft tests.
- Be able to work in harmony as part of a small crew, carry out deck duties including mooring up and letting go safely,
Does this sound like you?
- Hold Security Clearance (SC) or be eligible to obtain it.
- Hold an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certification for vessels under 500GT.
- Have qualifications aligned with MHR 202.9 Port Certification Matrices. STCW certs , minimum YM OFFSHORE (power) with a COMMERCIAL ENDORSEMENT, Crane operator’s cert and Edh desirable along with previous workboat experience
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills.
- Have a strong awareness of health, safety, and risk management.

Vetting and checks:
This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which involves verifying your identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record to meet government security standards. In addition, depending on the nature of the role, you may need to obtain formal Security Clearance (SC), which includes more detailed background checks on employment, criminal record, and financial history to ensure suitability for working in secure environments. Please note that UK residency requirements may apply for certain levels of clearance.
You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so we can identify and provide any support you may need to undertake the role effectively.
