As a Mate in our Marine Scotland team, you’ll play a key role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of our vessels. Your work will help ensure vital maritime services run smoothly, contributing to the security and sustainability of our waters.
This is a role where your expertise will make a real difference. From overseeing deck operations to ensuring compliance with safety standards, you’ll help create a safer environment for colleagues and communities alike.
What you’ll do as a Mate
You’ll be entrusted to:
- Plan and supervise maintenance of all deck areas, including holds, hatches, and superstructure
- Manage loading, discharge, and ballasting of the ship, ensuring stability and safety
- Oversee deck stores, including stowage, inventory, and re-ordering
- Act as a Watchkeeping Officer, following navigation procedures and international regulations
- Organise and conduct drills, including fire, oil pollution containment, and life raft tests
- Maintain accurate records for deck operations and tank soundings

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- SC clearance or have no problems obtaining one
- OOW <500GT
- Qualifications aligned with MHR 202.9 Port Certification Matrices
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong awareness of health, safety, and risk management
This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which involves verifying your identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record to meet government security standards. In addition, depending on the nature of the role, you may need to obtain formal Security Clearance (such as CTC or SC), which includes more detailed background checks on employment, criminal record, and financial history to ensure suitability for working in secure environments. Please note that UK residency requirements may apply for certain levels of clearance. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so we can identify and provide any support you may need to undertake the role effectively.
