Key Purpose:
To ensure the safe, professional and efficient delivery of operational services within the Refuse & Recycling department. The full management responsibility of a team within the Street Cleansing Department at Lambeth, in Environmental Services, which is a demanding commercial environment and has a portfolio of 370 (approx.) blue collar employees.
Reason For Role:
Manage the day-to-day operational service delivery of tasks to meet organisational standards, including frontline supervision and leadership of contract staff throughout the employee life cycle.
The focus of the role is on the deployment, utilisation and motivation of staff. Management, co-ordination and delivery of tasks, in order, for service standards, productivity and quality parameters are achieved whilst ensuring that health and safety and environmental standards are maintained.
Structure & Reporting Relationship:
This role reports to the Senior Supervisor of the Refuse & Recycling department, supporting across the Street Cleansing function. The role will require collaborative working with the operational departments on the Lambeth contract.
Key Accountabilities:
- To supervise the implementation of operational service delivery and contractual requirements on the specification of all works for your team.
- Utilise management information to drive improvement of service-related statistics whilst taking into account, vehicle servicing, MOT and repairs.
- Ensure policies, procedures and compliance are upheld and that all documentation is completed within specified deadlines.
- To monitor and inspect the standards of work completed, dealing with any matters which arise promptly.
- To identify, understand, implement and communicate key performance indicators and ensure that these are met.
- To regularly report to the line manager, progress on works and any matters which may arise, affecting service delivery.
- To work as part of the Supervisory team, putting forward suggestions and ideas for improvements in service provision.
- To be available and contactable for emergencies and manage changes to operational requirements.
- Manage a robust health & safety (people, vehicles, operations & environment) culture in full compliance with corporate governance policies, procedures and systems and all relevant legislation ensuring compilation of data and commitment to improving the safety and welfare of our people and environment within which we work.
- To support the process to recruit, motivate and develop a team to deliver the goals and aspirations of Serco, ensuring that the team is fully resourced with talented people who have the necessary strengths and integrity to be able to operate in accordance with Serco Values.
- To undertake Induction, supervision, management and leadership of employees ensuring that resources are available and utilised effectively.
- Ensure the management of employee relations matters is effective for all employee’s during the employee life cycle, the team’s compliance with the Serco operating model, Country Standard Operating Procedures and by exception, where applicable local policies for all employee relations matters.
- To ensure that adequate training is provided for all employees to provide the service requirements in a safe and cost-effective manner through effective personal performance development process.
- To participate in the absence management and welfare of all employees, ensuring the teams compliance with absence management objectives within the division.
- Support the activity of driving for and managing employee engagement within your team.
- To undertake regular performance management of employees resolving any issues which arise in a timely manner and in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
- To develop processes with employees, both individually and within teams to encourage open and honest communications.
- To represent and promote the ‘Serco Way’ to customers, stakeholders, the community and the public, fostering a partnership approach to relationships.
- To develop and maintain a network of relationships with the customer, potential customers, partners and stakeholders (to include employees, trade union representatives and any other relevant bodies) in order to anticipate and meet customers and stakeholders existing and future needs.
- To conduct regular reviews of plans, monitoring and taking action to ensure department targets are met, including submitting accurate and timely reports to the appropriate line management.
- To ensure effective cost management is in place in your team to achieve department budgets, being flexible and pro-active in your approach enabling improvement where possible.
- To ensure that you are working in line with any best practice framework that is in place for the delivery of the Department using processes, procedures and systems which are aligned to those in place across Serco.
Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualifications:
- Experience of managing a team and holds a management qualification
- Working within Refuse & Recycling or equivalent relevant environment (desirable)
- Experience of using IT applications Word, Excel
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work on own initiative, prioritising and managing workloads
- Willingness to undertake further training
- Driving licence

- Compile formal management reports and presentations from given data sources.
- Assist with coordination of internal and external training courses.

- Undertake ad hoc projects and assignments as and when necessary.
