Portering Operative

James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BW

Part time – 1300-1930 hours

Salary: £24,169 pro rata, per annum - pro-rata, plus Serco benefits.

Key Purpose:

To provide a comprehensive, quality, efficient and cost-effective Portering service within the whole of the Hospital, in line with contractual requirements ensuring patient care and customer service being at the forefront of service provision.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Ensure that all Portering tasks are undertaken in a professional, competent and safe manner in line with HSE Guidelines and Safe working practices.
  • Transportation of deceased patients from A&E and/or Wards to mortuary;
  • Key holders for mortuary out of hours to support with viewings to support legal processes i.e. certification of death;
  • Removal of soiled laundry from Wards and theatres ensuring delivered to the Laundry in line with Infection Control Regulations and HSE Safe Working;
  • Responsible for responding to cardio arrests and providing trolley and supporting equipment to the incident;
  • Ensure that all equipment is in a clean and hygienic state – weekend cleaning rota ofr wheelchairs;
  • Ensure that all equipment used to undertake the role are to the required standards to support safe working practices;
  • Transportation and collection of medical gases to all department and wards regularly;
  • Transport patients to and from X-ray when required (OOH);
  • Support the Patient Ambassador/Service Manager or Soft Service’s Lead to ensure the full service is compliant with the site ISO Regulations, quality and environmental policies;
  • Performance targets are to be met at all times in line with agreed standards;
  • Assist with maintaining appropriate records in line with service delivery
  • Ensure all tasked despatched via Portertrac are correctly accepted, started and completed in accordance with SLA’s 
  • Undertake the delivery of Specimens, Blood samples to the Pathology department in addition to the delivery of controlled drugs books to the Pharmacy. These tasks are the associated task relating to the Standard Operating Procedure of the Pneumatic Tube System.
  • Support in the provision of clean linen as and when required;
  • Emergency transportation of patients;
  • Ensure all HSE initiatives are managed proactively to ensure a safe working environment;
  • Escalate all and any risks to the Patient Ambassador and/or Service Manager;
  • Undertake any other tasks/duties as identified by the Patient Ambassador, Service Manager or Soft Services Lead

 

 

What is needed for the role:

  • This is a physical role, and the post-holder will be required to be mobile for most of their working day with manual handling being necessary to lift / carry / operate cleaning machinery.
  • NVQ or Equivalent Qualification.
  • Ability to read, write and converse clearly in English.
  • Basic awareness of Health & Safety working practices.
  • Previous experience working within a hospital or service environment.
  • Customer service skills including clear verbal communication.
  • Understand the importance of patient care, infection control and safety.
  • IT Literate to support innovation.
