On behalf of our client EUMETSAT, we are seeking a Computing Technician to provide technical support and operational assistance across computing, storage, and network environments within a critical data centre infrastructure. The role involves contributing to system monitoring, hardware maintenance, incident management, and day-to-day operational support activities while working within ITIL service management frameworks to ensure reliable and efficient service delivery.

The position is based on-site at EUMETSAT’s premises in Darmstadt and operates within a flexible hybrid working model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor systems and perform initial investigations of detected hardware, software, and performance issues.
  • Perform data centre operations activities.
  • Act as a single point of contact for all I2D matters and escalate tickets to Level 2 support where required.
  • Replace faulty hardware components on-site as required.
  • Guide vendor technicians when hardware replacement must be performed by the vendor.
  • Carry out standard administrative tasks, such as adding or removing users and file system maintenance, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform low-level configuration of computer systems and interfaces.
  • Install operating systems, COTS, and custom software.
  • Maintain software build and deployment environments.
  • Manage computer-side LAN connectivity cabling and configuration.
  • Perform testing activities.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation.

Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Linux systems administration (e.g. RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE).
  • Familiarity with shell environments and basic scripting (e.g. Bash).
  • Competency in using system monitoring and log analysis tools (e.g. top, journalctl, dmesg, vmstat, free).
  • Understanding of virtualisation platforms (e.g. KVM, VMware ESXi, or Proxmox).
  • Experience with system and networking basics (e.g. ss, ip, netstat) and SSH-based access.
  • Ability to follow runbooks and standard operating procedures, and to escalate issues appropriately.
  • Experience  working with the Atlassian JIRA Service Desk Tool.
