Serco have a fantastic opportunity for a Fuels Supervisor/Team Lead to join the ever-growing team at RAF Fairford.  

 

 You will be responsible for the management and oversight of fuels operations, ensuring environmental compliance, inventory accuracy, and readiness across ground fuel, aviation fuel, and cryogenic systems.

 

This is a great opportunity where you will direct daily fuels department operations in alignment with the Performance Work Statement (PWS) and ensures support for both peacetime and wartime mission requirements. You will also coordinate with U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) agencies and other stakeholders to maintain effective fuels support and operational excellence.


Main Accountabilities: 

 

 Operational Management

 

  • Direct fuels operations, including the handling and management of ground fuels, aviation fuels, and cryogenics.
  • Manage the receipt, storage, and issue of fuel from pipelines and tank trucks.
  • Oversee fuel dispensing systems, fuel and cryogenic storage facilities, and laboratory testing of fuel samples.
  • Determine fuel requirements; compute and analyze current and projected needs to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Plan and develop operational procedures, system designs, facility layouts, and reporting structures to support mission changes and ensure contract compliance.

 

Leadership and Supervision

 

  • Direct daily operations in compliance with USAF and contract guidelines.
  • Plan work assignments and equipment allocations to meet operational targets.
  • Supervise and train employees in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Resolve personnel issues, foster team collaboration, and implement performance improvement measures.
  • Recommend or enact personnel actions including hiring, evaluation, recognition, and discipline.

 

Compliance and Safety

 

  • Implement and enforce safety rules and regulations in accordance with UK Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) and USAF safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable AF Instructions, Technical Orders, DoD publications, DESC policies, and health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate with the Company Health, Safety, and Quality Manager on all HSE matters.
  • Maintain oversight of mandatory programs such as Land Mobile Radios (LMR), PMEL, Hazardous Waste/Material, Lockout/Tag-out, and Records Management.

 

Administrative and Reporting Duties

 

  • Prepare, compile, and submit weekly and monthly reports for USAFE HQ, DESC, DLA, AFPA, the 501st LG Officer, and the Contracting Officer Representative (COR).
  • Maintain compliance of all amendable documents and official records.
  •  May be designated as the Alternate Terminal Manager and/or Alternate Fuels Accountant, with appropriate training provided to ensure readiness to assume these responsibilities as needed.Support and monitor new hire inductions and assign relevant training plans.

 

Stakeholder Coordination

 

  • Liaise with USAF, DESC, DLA, AFPA, 501st Wing LG, COR, Geographically Separated Units (GSUs), and the Project Manager to ensure alignment with contract objectives and customer requirements.
  • Represent the Fuels Department in meetings with customers, contractors, and government personnel to exchange information and resolve operational issues. 

 

What you’ll need to do the job: 
 

 

Essential 

 

  • Ability to manage teams, solve complex operational problems, and work under pressure.
  • Must be IT literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to write clear, well-organized, and accurate reports using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English using complex sentence structures.
  • Must be capable of clearly, accurately, and promptly conveying and receiving verbal instructions, even in fast-paced or noisy environments.
  • Must be able to read and interpret general orders, instructions, and guidance, and appropriately apply them to specific situations.
  • Possess strong mathematical acumen with the ability to apply quantitative reasoning to solve complex problems logically and effectively.

 

Desirable

 

  • Demonstrated experience in fuels operations and leadership in a military or defense-related environment.
  • Must have an ADR/CPC Class 2 driver’s license.
  • Strong understanding of fuels logistics, cryogenics, environmental compliance, and military reporting requirements.
  • Ability to manage teams, solve complex operational problems, and work under pressure.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Air Force regulations and Department of Defense policies preferred.
