Make an impact at Serco
As a First Engineer, you’ll lead vital day-to-day engine room operations and support critical missions across marine engineering functions. You’ll play a key role in coordinating vessel maintenance, supervising machinery and systems, and upholding safety and environmental standards. Working closely with the Chief Engineer and other shipboard teams, you’ll ensure the vessel operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with regulations.
As a First Engineer, you’ll make a positive impact by:
- Supervising and coordinating engine room operations and machinery maintenance
- Managing safety checks, audits, and documentation compliance
- Supporting the Chief Engineer in ordering and managing stores and equipment
- Liaising with key crew to plan and prioritise maintenance and repairs
- Promoting safe work practices and environmental compliance
- Leading and mentoring engineering cadets and Integrated Ratings

To be successful in this role you’ll have:
- AMSA Engineer Class 2 III/2 & III/3 (Motor)
- AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness
- Current passport
- Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
- Experience with dynamic positioning systems
- Proven leadership and planning capabilities in marine environments
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and lead a collaborative team
We’d also love if you bring:
- Familiarity with medium- or low-voltage multi- or variable-speed drive propulsion systems
- Experience with integrated vessel management and control systems
- Hands-on knowledge of cranes and hydraulic systems
