We are hiring a Full-stack Software Engineer for the European Commission in Ispra, Italy and various locations around Europe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop front-end website architecture and user interactions.
  • Develop back-end web applications and implement core business logic.
  • Apply data and security best practices, including input validation, authentication and authorisation, secure data storage, and compliant logging and monitoring.
  • Ensure web applications are optimised for performance, functionality, and compatibility across browsers and devices.
  • Design and develop responsive web applications.
  • Design, develop, and maintain APIs and web services.
  • Participate in the design and development of scalable software solutions.
  • Maintain code quality, integrity, and organisation by producing clean, maintainable front-end and back-end code.
  • Analyse data, processes, and code to troubleshoot issues and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform unit and integration testing, debug applications, and validate code changes.
  • Deliver solutions that meet both functional and non-functional requirements while aligning with user expectations.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation.
  • Develop and maintain features across the full technology stack, including user interfaces, APIs, server-side business logic, and database interactions.
  • Deploy and manage applications in cloud environments using CI/CD pipelines and containerisation technologies.
  • Collaborate across front-end and back-end teams to ensure seamless integration of system components.

Specific Expertise and Technologies

  • Proficiency in front-end technologies, including JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience with front-end frameworks and libraries (e.g. Angular, React, Vue, Bootstrap) and modern build tools (e.g. Webpack, Vite).
  • Proficiency in Java, Node.js, or PHP back-end development, including Spring Boot, Hibernate, and REST API development.
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle) and NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB), including schema design and query optimisation.
  • Experience with Git workflows (e.g. GitFlow and trunk-based development) and familiarity with legacy version control systems such as SVN.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g. AWS and Microsoft Azure) and experience deploying and managing cloud-based applications.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Azure Bicep.
  • Experience designing, developing, and securing RESTful APIs and web services, including OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
  • Knowledge of containerisation and orchestration technologies (e.g. Docker and Kubernetes).
  • Understanding of authentication and authorisation standards, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT.

Minimum Level of Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Candidates must be eligible to obtain an EU SECRET security clearance, as this role involves access to sensitive information.

Certification and/or Standards

  • The following certifications, or equivalent qualifications, would be considered an asset:
  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate.
  • Other relevant AWS or Microsoft Azure certifications.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to participate in multilingual meetings.
  • Ability to apply software security and cloud best practices.
  • Experience integrating front-end and back-end development into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English; knowledge of French is considered an additional asset.
