Posting Start Date: 12 Dec 2025
Location: Rome, IT
Company: Serco Plc
Introduction
Serco is a trusted leader in Space Services, with a proud history spanning over 55 years and a track record of supporting more than 50 space missions for world-renowned agencies like ESA and NASA. Our expertise covers the entire space lifecycle—from satellite testing and launch services to spacecraft operations, space surveillance, and data management—making us a key partner in advancing national strategies and driving innovation in the New Space era.
We are currently searching for an experienced and dynamic System Analyst to join a groundbreaking European project at the forefront of satellite technology and climate research. The successful candidate will support the activities of our international team in Rome and work on a hybrid setup.
The Community You'll Join
You will work in an international, diverse team, surrounded by top-tier scientists, engineers, and technical experts who inspire and challenge you every day. You’ll have ongoing opportunities to grow through specialized training and professional development tailored to the space sector, all while being part of a company that genuinely values work-life balance, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to excellence. As you contribute to innovative projects and mission-critical systems, you’ll gain hands-on exposure to cutting-edge technologies and collaborate closely with major space agencies, becoming part of something truly extraordinary.
The Difference You'll Make
You will contribute directly to some of Europe’s most exciting space programmes, from Earth observation and climate monitoring to satellite navigation and space safety. Your work will play a vital role in ensuring mission success, enabling better decision-making on Earth and driving innovation in orbit. Whether you’re helping managing spacecraft operations, analysing mission data, or supporting software and systems development, your expertise will help move Europe’s space ambitions forward.
Your Mission
In this role, you will become the quiet guardian of a cloud-native kingdom, orchestrating applications across every layer of modern infrastructure—spinning up virtual machines, storage, and networks in the IaaS realm, steering containers through Docker and Kubernetes at the CaaS frontier, and nurturing databases and identity services in the PaaS and SaaS domains. You will shape this landscape for speed, resilience, and cost-efficiency, all while weaving scripts that automate routine tasks like invisible clockwork. As its watchkeeper, you will design and deploy monitoring systems—Prometheus, Grafana, the Elastic stack—to listen to the heartbeat of the platform and raise alarms when danger stirs. You will uphold security and compliance as the kingdom’s shield, automate database backups, and guide restoration efforts should disaster strike. When the night sends alerts, you will answer the call, ensuring systems stay alive and steady. You will hunt down performance bottlenecks, support tuning and capacity planning, and journey alongside developers, architects, DevOps engineers, and business partners to shape solutions that meet real needs. Through documentation and shared knowledge, you will leave behind maps for others to follow, and you will continue growing—studying new cloud technologies and mastering emerging tools to keep the kingdom evolving.
What You Bring To The Mission
In this journey, you are the seasoned traveler of the cloud realms, already comfortable navigating vast Cloud infrastructures and equally at ease wandering through the landscapes of Linux and Unix systems. Your toolkit is always ready: Python, Bash, and other scripting arts you’ve mastered to automate the world around you. You’ve forged and managed the watchtowers of monitoring—deploying, configuring, and maintaining tools that keep the kingdom aware and alert. Along your path, you’ve worked with code versioning and CI/CD pipelines, using Git, GitLab, and similar companions to ensure smooth, reliable delivery. You are no stranger to container-based territories—Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Rancher—moving through them with practiced confidence. Agile and DevOps principles guide your steps, shaping the way you collaborate and create. You speak and write in English at a B2 level, ensuring your voice is clear both in conversation and documentation. And your past quests have taken place in environments that never sleep—complex systems demanding 24/7 uptime, where you’ve stood ready during on-call rotations to protect stability when it matters most.
Alongside these core abilities, it is a welcomed bonus if you travel with deeper knowledge of the Elastic Stack, Grafana, or Prometheus—tools that sharpen the kingdom’s sight. Should you also be able to craft detailed technical procedures, manage ticketing systems like JIRA with ease, or understand the unique languages of Earth Observation satellite data, your contributions grow even more valuable. Familiarity with the Copernicus and Destination Earth (DestinE) programs adds further depth to your lore. And if your mind is honed for critical thinking and you carry strong self-organization as your compass, you will navigate challenges with clarity and purpose.
What You Bring To The Mission Extension
You begin this adventure with a solid foundation—at least a secondary school diploma that marks the start of your path. Over time, you’ve earned your place as a capable guardian of cloud-based applications, carrying at least two years of proven experience administering systems that live and breathe in the cloud. Your journey has taken you through vast, intricate IT landscapes, where complexity is the norm and every component has a story of its own. Along the way, you’ve worked closely with Earth Observation data, especially the Sentinel missions, navigating their dissemination systems as naturally as one moves through familiar terrain. The languages of satellite data formats are no mystery to you; you’ve learned to read them, interpret them, and work with them with confidence. Python and Bash are the tools you wield with precision, crafting scripts that automate, transform, and guide data through its workflows. And through it all, you’ve grown comfortable in Linux environments, shaping data analysis pipelines and operational routines with the steady hand of someone who knows the land well.
Your travels have also brought you close to the world of ESA’s data access systems and the intricate networks of the Collaborative Ground Segment, where you’ve learned how information flows from space to those who rely on it on Earth. You understand the inner workings of data processing pipelines and the power of API-based services that breathe life into Earth Observation applications. When others need guidance, you know how to translate complexity into clarity, producing technical documentation and enriching user knowledge bases with explanations that illuminate rather than obscure. And if your path has included time spent supporting customers or operating services within the space sector, that experience becomes a valuable companion—adding depth, empathy, and operational insight to your journey.
